Background of the Study

Business sustainability has become a critical area of focus for organizations worldwide, as they seek to balance profitability with environmental and social responsibility. However, the strategies adopted for sustainability can differ significantly between rural and urban enterprises due to varying resources, market dynamics, and challenges. SMEs in Kwara State, whether operating in rural or urban areas, must implement sustainability strategies that align with their specific context (Ibrahim & Anwar, 2023).

In urban areas, SMEs are often able to access better infrastructure, funding opportunities, and markets, enabling them to adopt advanced sustainability practices. Conversely, rural SMEs often face constraints in terms of access to resources, technology, and skilled labor, which can hinder their sustainability efforts. This study aims to compare the sustainability strategies of rural and urban SMEs in Kwara State, providing insights into how businesses in different environments approach sustainability.

Statement of the Problem

There is a significant disparity in the sustainability strategies adopted by rural and urban SMEs in Kwara State. While urban enterprises are better positioned to implement advanced sustainability practices, rural enterprises face challenges such as limited access to technology, markets, and funding. Understanding these differences and exploring how each group of SMEs approaches sustainability can provide valuable insights into how business sustainability can be fostered in diverse environments (Sulaimon & Sulaiman, 2023).

Objectives of the Study

  1. To compare the sustainability strategies adopted by rural and urban SMEs in Kwara State.
  2. To assess the factors influencing the adoption of sustainability practices among SMEs in rural and urban areas.
  3. To identify the challenges and opportunities for improving business sustainability in rural and urban SMEs.

Research Questions

  1. What sustainability strategies are commonly adopted by rural SMEs in Kwara State?
  2. What sustainability strategies are commonly adopted by urban SMEs in Kwara State?
  3. How do sustainability strategies in rural SMEs differ from those in urban SMEs in terms of effectiveness and challenges?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Rural SMEs in Kwara State adopt fewer and less advanced sustainability strategies compared to urban SMEs.
  2. The factors influencing sustainability strategy adoption differ significantly between rural and urban SMEs in Kwara State.
  3. Urban SMEs in Kwara State experience more success in implementing sustainability strategies than rural SMEs.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on SMEs in Kwara State, comparing the sustainability strategies employed by businesses in rural and urban areas. Limitations include the potential bias in data collection due to the subjective nature of sustainability reporting and the difficulty of obtaining data from all SMEs in the state.
